COMMUNITY WINS HOSPITALS BATTLE.
A big "thank you" to the 300 who completed and returned our hospital survey form. The upgrading of the Robina Hospital to a Secondary General Hospital has now been completed and there are now more expansion plans - which is precisely what we have all been working so hard to achieve.
As regards improvements to discharge procedures (also as requested) there has already been substantial improvements and further improvements are being planned.
As regards the suggestion that nursing homes and like facilities be now asked to provide bridging services for long term patients (who were not well enough to be discharged from hospital without support but were not ill enough to justify remaining in hospital), some progress has been possible in association with the State Government Department of Health and the work of three leading age care providers but much more is yet to be done. This month we will be concentrating on suggestions for an easier and more acceptable system for patient placement in nursing homes for discussion with Government and nursing home executives - will keep you informed through www.RetireesAu.org health pages and our monthly newsletters.
OTHER MATTERS
There seems to be so many needs and so many avenues open to serve seniors - if we continue to work together.Retirees Australia for its part has completed its policy planning for the coming year. It will continue as a totally independent, free and self supporting research group working closely with all organisations having similar aims
. and all levels of elected government. It is already loosely linked to some 50 associations and Government bodies for the purpose of discussing senior concerns and possible action. Arising partly from its 2002 survey into Gold Coast Community needs, it has, in association with other organisations, contributed substantially to :-JIM SIMPSON. RETIREES AUSTRALIA ON THE GOLD COAST
